Hiking Routes
Xeodestino Terras de Santiago has excellent natural and landscape resources that are worth discovering. Fishing grounds, trails and paths inland or by the riverside, megalithic monuments, unique species like the ones in the serra do Careón (Careón mountain range), which is part of the Rede Natura 2000, are just some of them. In the 28 municipalities of the territory there are numerous trails that will allow you to discover an outstanding nature, adding to the hiking routes approved by the Galician Mountaineering Federation which we summarize below. A sea of opportunities to enjoy.
PR-G 169 Ruta Fervenza das Hortas (Arzúa) (PR-G 169 Hortas Falls Route, Arzúa)

Starting Point: Capela da Fonsanta (Fonsanta’s Chapel), next to the Iso river, in Arzúa, about 45 minutes by car from Santiago
Punto de chegada: Fervenza das Hortas, no límite entre os concellos de Touro e Arzúa. Dende aquí pódese enlazar co PR-G 233, ruta da Fervenza das Hortas ao río Lañas.
The trail starts at Fonte Santa’s chapel, in the road that goes from Arzúa to Portodemouros’ dam. Among the main points, we can highlight Torrente de Maroxo (Maroxo’s Torrent), ending in the reserve of the same name and offering a unique panoramic view of Arzúa; Portodemouros’ dam; the honey museum O Enredo do Abelleiro (The Entaglement of the Beekeper) and, finally, the spectacular Fervenza das Hortas (Hortas Falls), 30 meters high and natural limit between Arzúa and Touro. This route can be done in the opposite direction, starting at the Fervenza das Hortas (Hortas Falls), as explained in this link
From the Fervenza das Hortas (Hortas Falls) you can continue through PR-G 233 to the mouth of the Lañas river in the Ulla, located in Touro, joining here with the PR-G 121, which in turn connects with the PR-G 93, allowing you to take a parallel route to the Ulla, downstream, about 40 kilometers long to the municipality of Boqueixón.

PR-G 129 Rodís-Xesteda Trail (Cerceda)

Starting and Arriving Points: Rodís’ Church, in Xesteda (Cerceda), about 45 minutes by car from Santiago or from A Coruña.
The trail can be started in two points: in San Martiño de Rodís’ Church, a small traditional architecture jewel, or in Santa Comba de Xesteda’s Church. Among agrarian and forest landscapes, the route goes through places like the bridges over the rivers Pazos and Cerdeira; Astande de Arriba, where there is a big hórreo (stone barn), or the Casa da Barrosa (House of the Barrosa).

PR-G 130 Meirama-Xalo-Meirama Trail (Cerceda)

Starting and Arriving Points: Santo André de Meirama’s Church (Cerceda), of Romanesque origin.
The trail goes up the Xalo mountains through the south slope, which is flatter that the north slope of the mountain range. North of the Coto do Río, barely 400 meters from this PR-G, is located the Pedra de Mazafacha (Mazafacha’s Stone), common limit of Cerceda, Carral and Culleredo’s municipalities and source of numerous legends.

PR-G 131 Cerceda-Portobrea Route (Cerceda)

Arriving Point: Recreation area and river beach of Portobrea, half an hour by car from A Coruña.
Suitable for mountain biking
Points of interest in this route are San Martiño de Cerceda’s Church, the riverside forest near the river Tourío, Revolta’s mountain, Lengüelle’s river banks and the river beach and recreation area in Portobrea. In the river forest that can be seen on this route the alder predominates, although willows are also present.

PR-G 117 Route from Fraga to the mills (Mesía)

Starting Point: Old road of Fraga, at Ricos’s place, in Visantoña (Mesía), 40 minutes by car both from Santiago and A Coruña.
Arriving Point: Ponte Carballa’s recreation area, in Olas.
Route designed to enhance the landscape and natural, historical, architectural and ethnographic patrimony of Mesía. Along the way you can visit four traditional restored mills and equipped with information panels: the ones in Ribeira, Queiroa, Batán and Cubela.

PR-G 238 Petroglyphs’ Route (Teo)

Starting and Arriving Points: Cornide (Teo). “Lollipop”-shaped route, less than half an hour by car from Santiago.
Suitable to do by bicycle or on horseback
Due to the great density of existing petroglyphs and deposits of mámoas and the characteristics of this engravings, this archeological ground represents one of the most important areas in Galicia. The route goes by the petroglyphs in the Angueira River, Outeiro do Corno or Pena Bicuda de Regoufe e de Loureiro, among others. It is recommended to do it at night to admire the petroglyphs under the lanterns’ light.

PR-G 125 Visantoña Trail (Santiso)

Can also be done by bicycle or on horseback
Most of the way is done through dirt tracks, going through prairies. Among this route’s points of interest we can highlight the Pazo Vilar de Ferreiros (Vilar de Ferreiros galician palace), the set of Muíños do Tajo (Tajo’s Mills), as well as the remains of the megalithic grave of the Ribeiro, the mámoas or the views of Portodemouros’ dam, built in the 60s over the river Ulla.

PR-G 226 Beseña Route (Santiso)

Recommended for mountain biking
Lineal trail of 37,78 km next to the river Ulla, recommended to do by bicycle. Its starting point is the Muíño dos Enmeigados (Mill of the Bewitched), in Barazón Grande, goes near Portodemouros’ dam at its end, where the only fresh water ferry in Galicia can be found which, for free, takes the passengers from Santiso to Vila de Cruces, in Pontevedra’s province.

PR-G 235 Sobrado dos Monxes Trail (Sobrado dos Monxes)

Starting and Arriving Points: Lagoa de Sobrado dos Monxes (Sobrado dos Monxes’ Lake), one hour by car both from Santiago de Compostela and Lugo.
Also known as “Pena Moura” route, this trail goes through prairies and small river valleys until ascending to Serra do Bocelo (Bocelo Mountain Range), where you can find the Pena da Moura. This route’s points of interest are Lagoa de Sobrado (Sobrado’s Lake), Forno dos Mouros (Moors’ Furnace) and Santa María de Sobrado’s Monastery. Moreover, from Coto dos Tarbos (Tarbos Grounds) you can get a great panoramic view of the northern part of the high Tambre’s grounds. The dolmen in Forno dos Mouros (Moors’ Furnace), in Toques’ municipality, is located very close to this route, and there you can continue with PR-G 168.

PR-G 166 Ruta das Fervenzas (Toques) (PR-G 166 Route of the Falls, Toques)

Starting and Arriving Points: Ponte da Grela (Grela’s Bridge), in Toques, one hour by car from Santiago de Compostela, Lugo or A Coruña.
Suitable to do by bicycle or on horseback
This trail starts near Ponte da Grela (Grela’s Bridge), in the municipal capital, and goes along parallel to the river Furelos towards the Serra do Careón (Careón Mountain Range), which is part of the Rede Natura 2000. In the first section there is a 2.1 km deviation that takes you through a more agrarian landscape. It’s suitable to do by bicycle or on horseback and connects with PR-G 167 and PR-G 168, allowing for the itineraries to be combined.
Besides its natural and landscape value, one of the main attractions is the Fervenza das Brañas (Brañas Falls), with a 20 meter high waterfall and an old mill.

PR-G 167 Ruta da Ermida (Toques) (Hermitage’s Route, Toques)

Starting and Arriving Points: 250 meters from Ponte da Grela (Grela’s Bridge), in Toques, one hour by car from Santiago de Compostela, Lugo or A Coruña.
Suitable for mountain biking and to do on horseback
The trail starts with a linear section that later turns into a circular one, can be done in 3 hours or can also be combined with PR-G 166 and PR-G 168.
The starting point is located 250 m from Ponte da Grela (Grela’s Bridge). At the top of the Serra do Careón (Careón Mountain Range), from the cruceiro da ermida de San Cidre (San Cidre Hermitage’s Cross) you can get a great panoramic view of the surroundings, which are part of the Rede Natura 2000 and have endemic species. The trail continues through the mountain tops towards San Xiao, where you can visit the hermitage, the oak grove, the Casa Grande do Herdeiro (Heir’s Big House) and the castro.

PR-G 168 Ruta dos Megalitos (Toques) (Megaliths’ Route, Toques)

Circular: No. There’s a 900 meter difference between the starting and arriving points.
Starting Point: Aldea de Mirallos (Toques) (Mirallos’ Village, Toques).
Arriving Point: Monte do Peneiral (Peneiral’s Mountain).
Suitable for mountain biking and to do on horseback
It could be considered a circular route, even though there is a 900 meter difference between the starting point, in Mirallos, and the arriving point, in monte do Peneiral (Peneiral’s Mountain), that can be done on its own or combining it with PR-G 166 and PR-G 167, which go through the serra do Careón (Careón Mountain Range), catalogued as “Place of Comunitary Importance”.
Besides the spectacular panoramic view from the serra do Bocelo (Bocelo mountain range), the main attraction in this route is the dolmen in Forno dos Mouros (Moors’ Furnace), one of the most important megalithic monuments in Galicia, which maintains almost all of its paintings.
PR-G 121 Ruta dos Tres Ríos (Touro) (Route of the Three Rivers, Touro)

Starting Point: Recreation area of Ponte Santaia, near Fonte Díaz, about 45 minutes by car from Santiago.
Arriving Point: Ponte Basebe (Bridge Basebe). From here you can start the PR-G 93.
Can be done the opposite way
The trail goes through the parishes of Touro, Fao, Cornado and Novefontes, parallel during most of the route to the rivers Lañas, Beseño and Ulla in a continuous and soft descent that finishes in Ponte Basebe (Bridge Basebe), which communicates Touro with Vila de Cruces. It can also be done the opposite way.
The route offers beautiful natural spaces and, moreover, allows you to observe numerous mills, the first of them being the mill of Carballa, at km 2. The fall known as Salto das Pombas (Pigeons’ Leap), with a 10 meter high fall, is another of this trail’s attractions.
At the mouth of the Lañas’ river it connects with the PR-G 233 and, in Ponte Basebe (Bridge Basebe), with the PR-G 93.
PR-G 93 Ruta da Ribeira do Ulla (Touro) (Ulla’s Riverside Route, Touro)

Starting Point: Ponte Basebe (Bridge Basebe), which communicates Touro and Vila de Cruces’ municipalities over the Ulla river. About 45 minutes by car from Santiago de Compostela.
Arriving Point: San Pedro de Ribeira.
Suitable for mountain biking and to do on horseback
Starting from Ponte Basebe (Bridge Basebe), the trail goes along the Ulla’s right river bank, having the river as the main protagonist. You walk along fishing trails among the riverside forests, the remains of mills and abandoned ouriceiras until you approach the beautiful surroundings of the fervenza do Inferniño (Little Hell’s Fall), the mills of Quintas and the ruins of the Pazo de San Cristovo (Galician Palace of San Cristovo), before going through the dam in Pozo do Pego (Bridge Pego) and finishing on the road to San Pedro de Ribeira.
It connects with the PR-G 121, which allows you to continue next to the river Ulla until the mouth of the river Lañas, joining here with the PR-G 233 until fervenza das Hortas (Hortas Falls), already in the limits of Arzúa’s municipality and, from here, continue with the PR-G 169.
PR-G 233 Ruta da Fervenza das Hortas ao Río Lañas (Touro) (Route from Hortas Falls to the river Lañas, Touro)

Arriving Point: Bridge in the mouth of the river Lañas.
Trail which, combined with the PR-G 169 and the PR-G 121, allows you to complete the 40 km of Ulla’s riverside in Touro’s municipality, between Arzúa and Boqueixón.
The route goes through groves and riverside forests and allows you to discover patrimonial and natural elements such as falls, bridges, mills, fountains or laundry spots. An optional one kilometer detour from Os Chaos leads to the petroglyph of Pena Furada.
PR-G 36 Trail of San Xoán da Cova (Vedra)

Arriving Point: Recreation area of Cubelas, in the parish of Covelas.
The lineal route goes along the Ulla’s right river bank, taking advantage of passage routes and fishing trails. It departs from Gundián’s viewpoint in San Xoán da Cova, at the feet of the impressive train viaduct 50 meters over the Ulla river, to reach the urban core of Ponte Ulla (Ulla Bridge) and continue through Agronovo’s recreation area, Ximonde’s grounds and finish at Cubelas’ recreation area.

PR-G 195 Mills of the Gándaras’ River (Vilasantar)

Starting Point: Ponte Sapo’s (Toad Bridge’s) Mill, in Vilasantar, 50 minutes by car from Santiago de Compostela or A Coruña.
Arriving Point: Gándara’s Bridge
River walk along the rivers Calabar and Gándaras, tributaries of the Tambre that separate Vilasantar from Boimorto, that starts at Ponte Sapo’s (Toad Bridge’s) Mill. During the trail you can see a dozen of mills, among which batán de Mezonzo stands out. Alongside the fall and the sawmill, this mill is part of a beautiful enclave that has a great ethnographic and cultural value.
